THREE REASONS WHY THE AZA BOOK CLUB TAKES FLIGHT IN 2021

A vast number of my traveling ideas have been inspired by great works of literature. I summited Mount Kilimanjaro after reading a single line from the book Me Before You. I journeyed to Antarctica because of an eccentric character allergic to suburban lifestyle in Where’d You Go, Bernadette. I’ve repeatedly returned to Barcelona because of one of my all-time favorite books, Shadow of the Wind

With a new year now upon us, ideas of resolutions begin to waltz through my head. Initially, 2021 will seem to resemble much of what we dealt with in 2020 as far as stifling quarantine restrictions and travel regulations. So, I wanted a way to stay connected with clients and dear friends to ensure that we keep our travel dreams alive while continuing to socially distance.

I reconnected with my wonderful friend Noelle Salazar, author of Flight Girls. We compared notes on the challenges of a quarantine lifestyle and discussed the idea of beginning a Book Club. Sharing an affinity for terrific books and exploring the world made the possibilities of this club so exciting to share with others.

Noelle and I discussed the main reasons why we thought this would be a terrific way to kick off the year 2021. Among them are:

1. Decreasing Stress

A 2009 study at the University of Sussex finds that reading can reduce your stress levels by up to 68%. Book clubs promote a love of literature in a positive and nurturing environment. First, you’re compelled to take time for yourself and immerse yourself in a new set of circumstances. Then you’re able to express your thoughts and feelings about what you read with others. Book clubs are calming, thought-provoking, intimate, and fun, delivering a wealth of destressing tools!

2. Advocating Human Connection

The purpose of any club is to bring the community together and to learn about things that matter to others. It’s a way of being social in a socially distanced world. Books emote differing reactions in everyone. Discussing these emotions is so wonderful. It offers the group the ability to compare thoughts on society while understanding our similarities and differences. This type of environment builds relationships and enhances daily life.

3. Promoting Inspiration

Consuming great works of literature is good for the brain and the soul. Books can spark curiosity, awe, and excitement. Reading books that you might otherwise pass by expands your horizons. At times, a Book Club may take you out of your comfort zone. This shouldn't be frowned upon, because it can encourage new cultural awareness and the acquisition of new perspectives.

While we are too often saturated in a world of technology devices, it is a crucial time to escape to the written word. In spite of self-isolation and lockdowns, we can find these new (yet old-fashioned) ways to soar. Let’s connect, inspire, and travel together in all the ways we can!
